Cooking Weight to Volume Converter
Convert between weight (grams) and volume (cups, tablespoons, ml) for common cooking ingredients.
How We Calculate This
This converter uses ingredient-specific density data to convert between weight and volume. Each ingredient has a different density, so the conversion factor varies.
The Formula
- Volume (ml) = Weight (g) / Density (g/ml)
- Weight (g) = Volume (ml) x Density (g/ml)
- Cups = Volume (ml) / 240
- Tablespoons = Volume (ml) / 15
Density Examples
- Water: 1.00 g/ml
- Flour: 0.52 g/ml
- Sugar: 0.83 g/ml
- Honey: 1.42 g/ml
- Butter: 0.945 g/ml (≈ 227 g per US cup)
Frequently Asked Questions
That only works for water. Flour is much less dense (1 cup = 125g, not 240g), while honey is denser (1 cup = 340g, not 240g). Each ingredient has its own density, which determines how heavy a given volume is.
Density is the mass per unit volume, expressed as grams per millilitre (g/ml). Water has a density of 1.0 g/ml. Flour has about 0.52 g/ml (much lighter than water), while honey has about 1.42 g/ml (heavier than water).
Weighing in grams is always more accurate because it is not affected by how you scoop, pack, or sift the ingredient. Volume measurements can vary by 10-20% depending on technique. For precision baking, always weigh.
The density values used assume a standard, level measure — not packed or sifted. Firmly packed brown sugar, for example, weighs about 220g per cup, but loosely scooped might be only 180g. Sifted flour weighs less per cup than unsifted.
Volume measurements depend on how you fill the measuring container. A cup of flour can weigh anywhere from 110g to 150g depending on whether it is scooped, spooned, sifted, or settled. Weighing gives the same result every time regardless of technique, making recipes much more reproducible.
