Freezer Capacity Calculator
Calculate how many portions or containers fit in your freezer by freezer volume and container size.
How We Calculate This
This calculator divides your total freezer volume by the volume of each container to estimate how many will fit. It then applies a practical packing efficiency factor.
The Formula
- Maximum containers = Freezer volume ÷ Container volume
- Practical containers = (Freezer volume × 0.80) ÷ Container volume (80% usable, ~20% left free for air circulation)
Typical Freezer Sizes
- Under-counter freezer: ~30 litres usable
- Tall fridge-freezer: ~100 litres usable
- Medium chest freezer: ~150 litres usable
- Large chest freezer: ~250 litres usable
Frequently Asked Questions
In practice, you cannot fill a freezer to 100% capacity. Gaps between containers, shelves, drawers, irregular shapes, and the need for air circulation all reduce usable space. We estimate 80% packing efficiency, which is realistic for well-organised freezers.
Check your freezer manual or the label inside the door. The volume is usually given in litres. If you cannot find it, measure the internal dimensions in centimetres (width x depth x height) and divide by 1000 to get litres.
Yes, freezers work most efficiently when air can circulate. Do not pack them completely full. Leave about 20% free space. This is already accounted for in our practical capacity estimate.
Use uniform, stackable containers. Label everything with the date and contents. Use freezer bags for flat items (they stack well). Keep a freezer inventory list on the door. Group similar items together (meats, vegetables, baked goods, meals).
Cool completely before freezing. Wrap tightly in cling film then foil, or use airtight containers. Label with the date and contents. Most cakes and breads freeze well for 2-3 months. Decorated cakes should be open-frozen first (freeze uncovered for 2 hours) then wrapped once firm. Thaw overnight in the fridge or at room temperature.
