Cost Per Serving Calculator

Calculate the cost per portion from total ingredient costs and number of servings.

How We Calculate This

This is a straightforward division calculator, but it is surprisingly useful for budgeting, meal planning, and pricing baked goods for sale.

The Formula

  • Cost per serving = (Total ingredient cost + Energy cost) × Overhead multiplier ÷ Number of servings

Energy cost and the overhead multiplier are optional Advanced Options. They default to £0 and 1.0 respectively, so out of the box the calculation is simply total ingredient cost ÷ servings. Add an energy cost (gas/electricity for cooking) or raise the multiplier above 1.0 when you want to factor in overheads such as packaging or your time.

Example

  • Total ingredient cost: £4.50
  • Energy cost: £0 (default)
  • Overhead multiplier: 1.0 (default)
  • Number of servings: 8
  • Cost per serving: (£4.50 + £0) × 1.0 ÷ 8 = £0.56
