Baking Tray Capacity Calculator
Calculate how many cookies or biscuits fit on a baking tray with proper spacing.
How We Calculate This
This calculator divides the usable tray area into a grid based on cookie diameter plus spacing to determine how many cookies fit per tray.
The Formula
- Columns = floor((tray length - 2cm margin) / (cookie diameter + spacing))
- Rows = floor((tray width - 2cm margin) / (cookie diameter + spacing))
- Cookies per tray = Columns × Rows
- Trays needed = ceil(total cookies / cookies per tray)
The spacing value is the gap you leave between the edges of neighbouring cookies, so each cookie occupies a cell of diameter + spacing. The grid count is deliberately conservative (it rounds down and treats each cell as a full diameter plus gap), so you will never overcrowd the tray. With a moderate-spread dough you can often squeeze in one extra row or column by staggering the cookies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most cookie recipes need 3-5cm between each cookie to allow for spreading. Cookies that spread a lot (like chocolate chip) need 5cm, while cookies that hold their shape (like shortbread) need only 2-3cm. Check your recipe for guidance.
Yes. Cookies placed too close together will merge as they spread during baking, resulting in one giant cookie. Proper spacing also allows hot air to circulate, ensuring even baking. Under-spaced cookies can also have pale, soft edges where they nearly touched.
Common UK baking tray sizes are: small (25x17cm), medium (33x23cm), and large (38x25cm or 40x30cm). Half-sheet trays used in professional bakeries are typically 46x33cm. Measure the inside flat area of your tray, not the outer rim.
Yes, but rotate the trays halfway through baking (swap positions and turn 180°) for even results. The top tray usually bakes faster. If your oven has a fan setting, this helps with multi-tray baking. Allow an extra 1-2 minutes if baking multiple trays.
Always line baking trays with baking parchment or a silicone baking mat. This prevents sticking, makes cleanup easier, and helps cookies bake evenly on the bottom. Greasing alone is not reliable for cookies.
