Scone Calculator
Calculate flour, butter, and milk quantities for scones based on batch size and cutter diameter.
How We Calculate This
This calculator scales the BBC Good Food classic British scone recipe. The base 225g recipe makes about 8 scones with the standard 5cm cutter. Because each scone uses dough in proportion to the cutter area (diameter squared), a larger cutter yields fewer, taller scones: about 6 with a 6cm cutter and 4 with a 7cm cutter from the same base dough.
Base Recipe (~8 Scones with a 5cm Cutter)
- 225g self-raising flour (no extra baking powder needed)
- 55g cold butter, cubed
- 25g caster sugar
- 150ml whole milk
- 1 large egg (for the egg-wash glaze)
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: 75g sultanas or raisins
Using plain flour instead? Add about 10g of baking powder per 225g of flour to replace the raising agent. Self-raising flour already contains this, so never add both.
Baking Tips
- Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C fan / Gas 7) — the calculator shows fan and gas-mark equivalents for your chosen temperature
- Brush tops with beaten egg for a golden finish
- Place scones close together on the tray for soft sides
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until risen and golden
