Jam Jar Quantity Calculator
Calculate how many jars a batch of jam will fill based on fruit weight, sugar weight, and jar size.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates the total yield of your jam batch based on the combined weight of fruit and sugar, accounting for approximately 15% water loss during boiling. It then divides that yield weight by the weight of jam your chosen jar holds to work out how many jars you need.
UK preserve jars are graded by the weight of jam they hold, not their water volume: a 1lb jar holds about 454g of jam, a 12oz jar about 340g and an 8oz jar about 227g. So 1kg fruit + 1kg sugar (≈1,700g of jam) fills about four 1lb jars.
The Calculation
- Total yield (weight) = (Fruit + Sugar) × 0.85
- Jars needed = Yield weight ÷ Jar weight capacity (rounded up)
Tips
- Always prepare 1-2 extra sterilised jars
- Leave 5mm headspace when filling
- Fill jars while jam is still hot for the best seal
