Cake Portions Calculator
Calculate how many portions a cake yields based on tin size and slice dimensions.
How We Calculate This
Portion counts use the standard area-based method: divide the cake's top surface area by the footprint of one slice. Each slice has a width and a depth (how far into the cake it is cut), so the footprint of a single portion is slice width × slice depth. The same formula applies to every shape — only the way you work out the cake's area changes.
Formulas
- All shapes: Portions = cake area ÷ (slice width × slice depth)
- Round area: π × r² (where r = diameter ÷ 2)
- Square area: side × side
- Rectangular area: length × width
Example: a 20cm round cake cut into party portions (2.5cm wide × 5cm deep) has an area of π × 10² ≈ 314 cm². Dividing by the 12.5 cm² portion footprint gives about 25 portions. Round cakes lose a little to curved edges, so treat the figure as a planning estimate and add 5–10% extra when catering.
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard party or finger portion is about 2.5cm wide and cut to the full depth of the cake. These are the slim slices typically served at weddings and large celebrations where cake is one of many sweet items.
A dessert portion is typically 4cm wide — a generous slice for when cake is the main dessert course. Using our default 5cm slice depth, that is about 1.6× the footprint of a 2.5cm party portion, so a cake yields roughly 60% as many dessert portions as party portions.
For maximum portions from a round cake, cut it into concentric rings (for very large cakes 25cm+), then cut each ring into portions. For standard sizes, cut through the centre into wedges.
The calculation gives a good planning estimate. In practice, you may get slightly fewer portions due to crumbling edges and uneven cuts. For catering, add 5-10% extra to be safe.
For a celebration cake, a standard portion is a slice approximately 2.5cm wide x 5cm deep x the height of the cake. For a generous buffet-style portion, increase to 3-4cm wide. For a wedding cake, portions are often cut smaller (2cm x 5cm) as guests typically have other desserts available.
